Come Paint With Me...
And with this, the idea was planted.
Scars Are Beautiful

I love scars. Roadmaps of a life, honoring personal challenges, reminding us of who we used to be, and how far we've come. It's often the little things that make us stronger and ultimately, more beautiful.

Sneak Preview....New Watercolors and the Inspiration Behind Them

A new design I am working on...a simple watercolor butterfly that will grace the front of one of our newest products, Women's T's! The T-shirts arrived this week and are gorgeous! And, just in case you think I would feature my art on just any old T-shirt, let me share that we searched for months, tried on sample after sample to find the perfect shirt that was worthy and trust me, these babies are lovely...really beautiful, super soft cotton with great cut and fit. I'll let you know when they are ready for viewing.
And on a not entirely unrelated note, I'd like to give a shout out to a new Twitter friend, whose beautiful piano compositions kept me company during my painting yesterday. His music (my favorite is "Pristine") was the backdrop during my latest creative burst and so I just wanted to say, "Thanks Loren! Your work is cool". Check out a sampling of Loren Digiorgi's work at http://www.lorendigiorgi.com/
And speaking of Twitter, yes, I tweet and yes, come follow along! I'll admit I am borderline obsessed, but all good things deserve ample attention! Where else can you share your thoughts about life, inspiration, art, studio time, family, sleep or lack thereof?? I ramble often about all of these things. Besides, there are many wonderful people there, looking to connect and share with you. Come join the fun! http://twitter.com/shellartistree

The Best Personalized Wedding Gift

We recently launched a new Jewelry collection and have been offering our beautiful glass lockets with several of my art designs tucked beneath the glass. We envisioned this being a great gift that a Bride could give to her Bridesmaids, especially since each locket can be personalized with a different art design. I still think this is a brilliant idea. But, guess who has been scooping these beauties up? The Grooms! Seems they had a better idea in mind…a one of a kind Wedding gift, from Groom to Bride on wedding day.
We are pleased to offer our glass locket collection, now available with your wedding date printed on one side, and a design from your chosen Ketubah on the other.
Please view all of our beautiful and unique wedding jewelry collection here.

Beautiful Wedding and B'nai Mitzvah Jewelry

I met Dara Adams about a year ago. Funny, smart and truly genuine, I was instantly charmed by her as well as her beautiful and unique jewelry designs. Each, like tiny works of art, I felt a connection, artist to artist. When I first saw her Sterling and Glass Lockets, I immediately envisioned my own watercolors swimming beneath the glass. I bought one and inserted one of my own tiny watercolor designs into the Locket. Locket Love followed...everyone commented on the uniqueness of my artistic necklace and I knew I was onto something. The opportunity to work collaboratively with Dara is a thrilling one for me. I love her work and am so pleased to finally offer her extraordinary hand made jewelry designs to my discerning clientele.

Make Your Furniture Jealous...

Like most true artists, I find my best inspiration often comes from my long list of obsessions.
I have been a fan of British designer, Paul Smith for many years. His collection of colorful rugs is instantly recognizable...contemporary rug designs in wool and silk. When last in SoHo. I visited The Rug Company to see his work up close. It is astonishingly beautiful. My personal favorite, Swirl...gorgeous in the jpg snap above, but positively yummy (covetable) in person.

The Word is "Writing"....

I love the written word and I enjoy nothing as much as sharing in this way. For me, the deepest relationships of my life were forged via the words that flew between us...the bond that only the written word can create.
Anyway, speaking of inspiration and words flying between us, ...I am reminded of a favorite poem by a famous Romanian poet/artist named Nichita Stanescu. Not sure if it will resonate with you in the same way it does with me, but there is vivid imagery and energy in Stanescu's words. They move me and so, in the spirit of inspiration, please allow me to share...
Then we met more often.

Ketubahtree.com Website Redesign Complete

I know...I disappeared. But I have good reason!

This is what happens when gals my age decide they should join a women's soccer league.
Tore my calf muscle, which means no running, no soccer... 8 weeks of rest, physical therapy and that oh so stylish black boot. But hey, it could be worse...I've always been a glass half full kind of girl.
I initally took some time off from the studio, but I am back, crutches and all, and working hard with Kari, Sarah and the rest of the team on our newest artistic Spring projects.
Forgive my absence. Good stuff to follow...

Finding Inspiration

Ice cold winter days that sink into dark skies far sooner than I would like are the catalyst for todays Finding Inspiration entry. Cold to my bones, I search for and seek the warmth of the sun. Be kind, drop me in the dry desert and let me melt. What could inspire the artist in me more than the smoky cinnabars, aubergines and amber rays of the desert landscape? Where others see desolate dryness, I see only rich warm colors that pull me in...you've gotta look closely to find supple green among the sand and rock. But when you train yourself to see past the vastness of mountains and red rock, you'll see the beauty of the big sky and a depth and range of colors that will leave you breathless.

Like the ripples on the water, I am reminded that life flows along...continues rolling from minute to minute, day to day, year to year. This constant movement is a beautiful thing. Life is all about holding dear the past which helped make us who we are, enjoying the moment which is now (the greatest gift we have) and anticipating the mystery around the corner, the promise of the future yet to be. I am fortunate in that so many deeply incredible people have been part of my life so far...taught me, inspired me, changed me, moved me, loved me. I wish the same for all of you.
All my love, as we roll along together, into 2009.

Studio Open House- a few more pics

Great show everyone! In spite of lousy weather, we had a wonderful turnout! We sold many original watercolors which will make way for new ones to be framed out. Sold out of the boxed Notecards ( THANK YOU!!) which was fascinating for us, as this was a new test product. We'll reprint at once and fulfill your orders quickly if you ended up having to special order some packs. Shows like this are really invaluable to an artist- It gives me a quick read on which designs resonate most. I received some great feedback on some of my new paintings and I was able to share my day to day product lines with many who knew I was an artist, but didn't quite understand how it all fit together in a business sense. Thanks to all of you who came out on two dreary, cold and rainy days in support of me and my art. I'm lucky enough to do what I love and as always, it means a great deal to me to be able to share that with the many dear friends I have in my life. For those of you who couldn't make it out, I'm tentatively planning another show this February at the Nelligan gallery. If you wish to be on our studio emailing list please drop me a line ( michelle@shellartistree.com) and I will add you to the list. Hope to see you then!

PoetreeStudio's Redesign Begins
For those of you following, Friday is "lock the artist in the studio until she paints something" day. Although I have no new watercolors to show for today, I have been diligently working on a different labor of love. Poetree Studio is my online portfolio for my watercolors...it's the place I post my non wedding related work...my soul works. It's true that when I paint, it is usually with the focus of adding to my wedding collections, either via a new ketubah or vow certificate design, wedding invitation or gift print concept. But occasionally, I do just allow the non business specified thoughts to flow and I just zone out and paint. I enjoy "small works", tiny vignettes, a snapshot in time...quick paint flow to capture mood or color or line. I am probably at my best during those rare painting sessions. Painting makes me feel really, really good.
But Poetreestudio needs a facelift. Designed in 1989 by my most talented web guru, Stephen Rosen from Sitemind.com, it's time for the site to be updated. Many works have sold and are not marked as such. Many are new and need to be added. So today, the updating is begining. Victoria and I have been working hard to update content, and when that is complete, Stephen will rework his magic and make Poetreestudio a more modern visual stunner befitting a website that is almost 10 years old. Stay tuned...and watch the transformation unfold over time naturally, all without Botox.

Writing Your Own Wedding Vows
Writing your own text/vow statement is an act of true love. Often, our clients have the desire to create this personal statement, but feel daunted by the challenge of puting their deepest feelings in writing. We encourage you to take the challenge!
Below are a few tips compiled from a fantastic resource blog called "I do I do...The Marriage Vow Workbook" that will help you write wedding vows that are compelling, authentic and enduring, and are symbolic of your permanent and beautiful commitment to each other.
1. Write vows in the positive (e.g., “I will treat you with respect,” instead of, “I will not be disrespectful toward you.”).
2. Write vows in the way you speak. If you’re plainspoken, write your vows that way and leave flowery prose to others.
3. Write vows that have a sense of the sacred. Such vows come from deep within and you will willingly take them on. If a vow seems to be a directive, a command, or an ultimatum, set it aside and choose another.
4. Write vows that are broad enough to apply to your life today and your life fifty years from now.
5. Write Vows that make you feel joyful, inspired, excited, and optimistic.
6. Write vows using bold language. Examples include “I will,” “I commit to,” “As your partner/husband/wife/friend/lover I intend to . . .”
7. Write vows that matter to you and your partner that authentically express what’s in your heart.
8. Once written, read your vows aloud to make sure the language flows well; revise any awkward sections or phrases that you might stumble on.
9. If you intend to memorize your vows, keep a copy of them with you during the ceremony, just in case. Or have the officiant lead you through them, with the officiant saying them first and you repeating them afterward.
10. Coordinate your efforts with your officiant. Remember that some religions have restrictions on the vows that can be used in a marriage ceremony. Your officiant may be able to offer suggestions for your vows and incorporate them seamlessly into the ceremony.

It's Painting Time

Boogie Shoes

"While browsing Martha Stewart’s wedding website for something new and unique, I came across a charming and fun idea that I will definitely use if I’m ever a bridesmaid again. I think almost every bride saves their dress and shoes from their wedding day, so why not have your bridesmaid sign your shoes as a special memento! There is nothing better than finding different cultural traditions that you can incorporate to make your special day unique!"
Martha Stewart Weddings says: "Try a who-will-marry-next tradition that Turkish brides have been practicing for generations. Before you start down the aisle, have your single bridesmaids (or any female friends or relatives who marry) autograph the sole of your bridal shoe. After you've danced the night away (and tossed your bouquet), legend has it that the person whose name has faded the most will be the next to marry."

Inspired By Shell...Home

At a glance, a sampling of beloved art and objects from my home that inspire the artist in me...
I enjoy tactile, dimensional, textural objects that I can feel with my fingertips. Soothing colors and organic lines thrill me. I love all things cactii and natural light. My art collection is quirky, eclectic and ever changing. I am prone to getting bored quickly and my home is often my canvas, reflecting the revolving door of new ideas, passions and interests that come to mind.

When Less is More...Elegant Bridal Accessories

"As a designer I appreciate all forms of art, and I particularly love to find simple and elegant jewelry designed in some unique fashion. I often find a jewelry designer that I love and purchase pieces that really capture me. The other day I found myself browsing Tacori’s site. They produce high end jewelry that you can find advertised in almost every bridal magazine. The unique thing that captured me this time around was not their beautiful engagement pieces that are easily recognizable, but their whole collection of Bridal accessories. The line is made up of a few small to large pieces full of flowers, Swarovski crystals, and pearls. They seem more affordable than some designer bridal jewelry because they aren’t necessarily scattered with expensive jewels, but have a more simplistic and feminine feel. It’s a great fit for someone looking for popular jewelry designer while trying to stay within a budget."

Color Inspiration
I feel about color, the way many people feel about food. Color warms, comforts, inspires, energizes, soothes. It fills my soul in a way that not much else can. I spend alot of time working through the color choices I make when creating a new painting. The palette is usually specifically chosen to convey a mood.
Many years ago, my brother in law gave me a precious gift. A wonderful book that I often use to help me organize a palette into cohesive, pleasing combinations. Called, Colors in Context by Naomi Kuno, this incredible color guide, well worn with time, allows the reader to view color by themes, such as Colors of Literature, Art, Music or History, Ideology and Mythology, Nature and Meteorology. The idea is that specific colors convey all sorts of vivid mental images and messages...Colors move us and we have a conscious recall of different times and places, based on color. Different nuances of color evoke powerfully different memories for each of us.
While we all can easily identify simple emotions with color (passion=Vibrant Pink, Energy= Orange) it's much more interesting to see how color and more abstract themes work together.
Free associate with me for a moment...a soft pale green known as "Garden Pool" might bring words like cool, graceful, relaxed to mind. Whereas, "Storm Green", a dull gray green instanly feels heavy and damp. "Fresco Blue", a light greenish blue reminiscent of Italian Frescoes, might make you think, fresh, delicate and translucent.
It's like learning another language. When I paint, I just know what colors I need to add to others to bring to light the exact mood I am after. More instinct than thought, my brush swirls in and out of my watercolor pans; a dab of Vanilla White brings warmth, a touch of Baltic Blue adds depth to other colors that may seem flat without it. When it works, it is pure joy.

Beautiful and Simple Wedding Cakes

"For all of you locals out there, we have a lovely little bakery around the corner that I’d like to share with you. I have used Victoria’s Cakery on many occasions just by stopping in and seeing what is available in their case. Although I’m usually there for their small 6” cakes to take home that day, you can’t help but notice all the other beautiful cakes and desserts they offer. They have beautiful yet simple cakes that are of course delicious, and traditional looks are never out of style. I’ve been to quite a few weddings that do not even offer a slice of cake, but have different desserts the couples are very fond of instead. Consider Victoria’s Cakery’s other desserts (tea breads, cheesecakes, scones…yum!) for a non traditional wedding reception. The staff has a great personal touch, which is something we strive for here at our studio as well. Located in the heart of Old Town Fairfax City just a few short blocks from Shell’s fine art studio."

Beautiful Form
As many of you already know, I collect pottery. I have amassed quite a collection over the years that is near and dear to my heart. Inevitably, friends always ask where I found such unusual artistic pots. Although I collect (stalk??) from a variety of artists, one of my favorite artisans is Jonathan Adler. I must confess that I truly loved his work way back when he was just a potter...there was a natural simplicity to them that spoke to me. These days, Adler has become a prolific style icon, designer and TV personality...his groovy collection grows by the minute and now includes rugs, pillows and furniture. I am partial to his Relief pottery collection...beautiful organic shapes and forms which fancy up even the most humble lump of clay.

I think that this is a beautiful tradition and even though I am not of the Jewish faith I would love to have a Ketubah or an equivalent when I get married. Bright, Beautiful, Bold Colors...words from the Shell Artistree Staff

Since Shell focuses on creating joyful, bright paintings to reflect the emotion and excitement connected to your big day, it’s not really a surprise that this year’s color trends fall right in line with her ketubah works of art. My personal favorite happens to be the Color Field VI Ketubah design, because of its bright red and orange hues. Reminds me of a sunrise, and since it comes in four other color variations it’s an easy ketubah to match with your personal wedding color palette!"

"All My Love" Original Watercolor Painting, by fine artist, Michelle "Shell " Rummel"For my fortieth birthday, all I wished for was a trip to New York City to visit the Neue Galerie to see Gustav Klimt's work with my own two eyes. My wonderful husband granted me that wish and I can tell you that I literally had tears in my eyes as I stood inches in front of Klimt's famous portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. Aside from the impressive size, what struck me most was the light that seemed to emanate from it. It's a remarkable piece, dazzling really. Standing with my eyes just inches from the canvas, this privilege afforded me a close-up look at each precise brushstroke and I found myself viewing this masterpiece in microcosm for the first time. In reality, the work looks nothing like the mass produced replicas that saturate our marketplace. As a long time (and long-distance) Klimt admirer, it was a joy to realize this and the best birthday gift I have ever had."
-Shell
And two days later, I received this fantastic email from a Painters Keys reader:
"Michelle - I just LOVED your painter's keys entry that showcased "All My Love" Just beautiful! I spend (probably too much time) browsing the internet looking at what other artists are doing - a lot of it starts to looks all the same - and this piece is one of the most original, fun, whimsical, lovely things I've seen in awhile. You must have had so much fun creating it. As I looked at your work and Klimt's, it made me think that you have found a way to admire his work and yet make it totally your own. Keep at it and BRAVO!"

Modern Symbolism
My ketubot all originate from my original watercolor paintings. Traditionally, the ketubot that I create have some symbolic imagery incorporated into the design. Sometimes, the imagery comes from biblical visual references such as the beautiful imagery from Song of Songs, although admittedly this is not my first source. More often, the symbolism stems from my own life and love, my own point of reference for what is truly important as two enter into a committted relationship. For instance, I often depict butterflies in my work, not only because they are lovely to paint but also because to me, they represent individual freedom of expression...a quality I personally hold dear. Mine is a more modern approach and I love finding unique ways to symbolically depict traditional, and sometimes not so traditional Marriage and Commitment concepts. We all have our own personal list of qualities that we feel are essential for everlasting love. I take great joy in finding visual ways to depict these symbolic concepts in my art.

Meant to Be...

I also wanted you to know the shock that came after the ceremony. My mother, who is an artist as well, presented us with a gift - an oil-on-canvas portrait of Gil (my husband) and I. She began this painting when we first got engaged and could not have possibly predicted that the ketubah of our choice would present the same image - of two people embracing and holding each other. It was amazing! It was one of those moments when you just know things were meant to be this way. I've included a link to a few pictures I've uploaded to show you what I mean.
I wanted to write this email to let you know that sometimes your art will touch people in many many ways that are unpredictable and everlasting. Thank you for everything!"

Kind words from our clients...

"Thank you for doing such an incredible job on our Ketubah. We were in an awkward situation because our Rabbi had his own personally designed Ketubah. We loved the Life Dance design and wanted to incorporate some of his words into our own Ketubah. Michelle Rummel and everyone at Ketubah Tree were so helpful and designed a personalized ketubah with our Rabbi's words on the top of the tree branches. It looked beautiful and sounded beautiful. My husband and I read our Ketubah together under the Chuppah. Everyone was very touched and we thank you for making the Ketubah such a wonderful part of our wedding experience. "

Non Linear DiscoveryIn most circles, I am known for my organic and abstract paintings of trees and landscapes. But, a few years back I became enamored with another subject. Lines.
It is fair to say that I became obsessed. I painted them vertically, horizontally, skinny, thick, rigid and wavy. I painted them in acrylic and watercolor...some only tiny inch long vignettes and others up to four feet long. I sketched them with pencil and ink. I played with unusual color combinations. I dreamt the colors and images and each day became more and more inspired to paint.
Those that knew and loved me became...um...concerned. "What's with the Lines??" they asked. "I don’t get it!" they commented. "I miss your trees" said my 10 year old. It seemed that everyone but me wished for my return to those trees.
With only my own quiet optimism, I decided to submit a Line painting into a competitive juried art exhibit. I titled it, NonLinear Discovery in honor of my journey outside my comfort zone. Can you imagine my face when I received the phone call saying I had won the Best In Show Urquhart Award? Can you imagine the faces of my doubters when I shared my news?! Oh yeah...that moment was really sweet.
Who can say why that juror chose my painting? A non linear moment in time where my artistic vision resonated perfectly right with that particular viewer. I painted what I loved, and he loved what I painted.
It's as simple and as complex as that.

In search of...
Sunrise...Bethany Beach, DE- Grotto's pizza. Went straight to Rehoboth and ordered a slice. Trust me. It's that good.

- Aloe vera gel, to soothe what the wind left behind.
- Hard shell crabs and a wooden mallet.
- Peace and quiet.
- Absolutely no internet access.
- Funnel cake. Mouthful of yum.
- Sand castles, sun and big waves.
- A clean, sand free motel bed.
- The wish for Sweet Inspiration...

Wishes granted. Thanks for the kick, gals.

Thank you so much for your timeliness in preparing this for us. We could not have imagined a more perfect ketubah buying experience."Monday, June 25, 2007

Marni and Mike
Every client is important to me, but every once in a while, there's a standout. Marni and Mike found me in 2004. Mike had questions...ALOT of questions. Like many Bridegrooms, he was in charge of the Ketubah purchase. We debated text placement. We discussed design colors and font choices. We talked at length about ketubah customization. We debated/discussed/talked until the questions stopped flowing and Mike was satisfied and the ketubah was exactly as he and Marni wanted it to be. It was a memorable client/artist relationship, and in the end, we became friends. Almost 3 years later, we are still periodically in touch and Marni and Mike just welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their lives. It's an honor to know that my art hangs in their home and I feel particularly blessed to be able to watch their love and lives unfold.
Here they are, along with Mike's words:

"Sometimes you just see a piece of artwork and you know it's right. In planning for our wedding, my wife Marni came home and said, "You've got to check out this Ketubah I found online from a friend." We both looked at it, and it was pretty easy to decide that was it. The piece (Life Dance IV ) speaks for itself.
Simply, it's just beautiful. Just look at it. The color, the design, the feel, the texture. About 2 1/2 years later, I walk by it every day in our living room and it still makes me smile as if I just received it.
But, beyond the beauty of the artwork (which speaks for itself), working with Michelle was just a pure pleasure. Wedding planning's a stressful time as any couple will tell you. She kept us calm, as we worked through some customization on the design and wording of the Ketubah. She was exceedingly accommodating and flexible, and made us feel like we were her most important customer.
If I ever know anybody looking for a Ketubah, I know where to send them."

I get attached...
I've been using the same paint palette for well over 10 years. It's the tray in the middle...the one with the round pans of pigment. In some of the pans, there is only a slight trace of pigment left. I'd be devastated if not for the fact that a single drop of water miraculously revives it, creating a seemingly endless pot of color. Watercolors are cool that way...they live on and on.Watercolor Brushes, on the other hand, do not. My favorite brush, the one I got attached to, no longer exists. The one in the pic is a replacement...second best. My beloved watercolor brush, so delicate, fit in my small hand with such perfection for many, many years ...the point of the bristles so precise... the weight of the handle, just right. In time, I noticed that the bristles were becoming a bit thin...a few stray ones on my watercolor paper, and one or two in the wash water. I went into a serious state of denial. This was my lucky brush! With this brush, I could salvage even the most overly painted disaster into a brilliant masterpiece. After all, This was the brush I used to paint the Life Dance Ketubah series which, to date, has become my best selling Ketubah designs. I could not leave the fate of this brush to chance.
I took extra care to gently wash my brush after each use. I lovingly rolled it in linen to preserve it. But each time I unrolled it, there'd be another lost bristle. Eventually, worn down, I came to terms with the inevitable and started looking for a, uh um... replacement. Not as easy as it sounds...it took me 6 months scouring through art supply catalogues, endless websites and countless art stores to find a suitable substitute. Fortunately, I finally did and me and my bristley new brush adjusted and went on to paint the All My Love Ketubah and the Fulfillment Ketubah series...which is not too shabby for second best.

At a time when there is so much going on, you have really made this part of our wedding planning so easy for us. It was a pleasure to do business with all of you and I highly recommend you to anyone who is in need of a Ketubah.

Remembering Mrs Aldrich...
Back then, preschool was not the norm. Safely at home for my first few formative years with mom, she certainly had never allowed me to wield those sharp(and potentially dangerous!) scissors before and so, sitting in Mrs Aldrich's class, I vividly remember how excited I felt to finally have the chance to wrap my little fingers around this forbidden item and start cutting!
Not surprisingly, I had a little trouble with the scissors. My first cut sliced awkwardly into the white paper. I sliced the small circle RIGHT IN HALF...uh oh. This wasn't working out exactly as I had imagined it would. Try, try again mom always said. SLICE! There went the big circle...CHOP CHOP CHOP....the little jagged slivers of white paper flew through the air, piled up on my desk and slid onto the floor. No matter...this was art! I was CREATING!! and WITH SHARP SCISSORS!!!! I was having the time of my life. It didn't matter at all to me that not one of my cutouts resembled a circle much less a snowman...deliriously happy, I glued all my little jagged shards of paper into a fabulous "snowman collage" and beaming, proudly presented it to Mrs Aldrich and waited for the accolades.
Her reaction stopped me in my tracks. She frowned...she stood up, imposing body stance, and crossed her arms across her chest. She looked...well...she looked really mad. She suddenly grabbed my art and held it up over her head. She announced to the class that my snowman was "a perfect example of what not to do". I did it "wrong". My snowman was "ugly". I had "ruined it" by cutting outside the lines. And, she "had better not see anyone else make a mess of her nice snowman project the way Michelle did". Wow...I couldn't wait to tell my mom!
But at that moment, stuck in my kindergarten classroom, I simply sat and cried. How could I not?? Just five years old, feet barely touching the floor and here I was receiving my first painful lesson about the consequences of thinking outside the box. Thanks to my insightful mother who prominently hung my "one of a kind!" collage on the refrigerator door, I steeled myself to Mrs Aldrich's narrowminded criticism and moved on.
I'm often asked if I was an artistic child. I know that, in spite of some along the way who never saw or fostered the creative in me, I clearly was. I pride myself on continuing to create ( and live!) outside the lines.

The Elusive Painting Time
It's difficult for me to paint in winter...the available day light is limiting, and the quality of the light, well, it feels somehow diminished although in reality that may not be true. I'm naturally a summer gal...love the strong summer sun and heat. In my studio office, I keep a space heater and I generally blast it if the temps fall below 70 degrees....really. But, the light needs to be right. The light ensures that my colors are clear and clean...that they work together harmoniously. The wrong light distorts the colors. And for me, the color palette sets the mood of the painting... it is essential.
Finding free time is a constant life challenge. Nothing worse than beginning to paint and then realizing you've lost the time to properly get lost in the moment. I run Shell Artistree by day and then try my best to keep up with the demands of my family life by night. Not that I'm complaining, but my kids run me ragged from the moment school is out until the little one is tucked into bed. The kids do what kids do best...they eat my free time.
I've always been a bit of an insomniac. Although I can't always find my sleep, my mind is somehow clearer in the middle of the quiet night. It's my best thinking time, my working stuff out in my head, time. If only there were some decent light, I might actually be more creatively productive during the 1-3am shift...
For me, during painting time, loud background music is a must. When the music is really loud, it becomes like white noise, it kind of quiets all the other thoughts...lets me just get lost in the rhythm of the painting. I'm often asked about my taste in music. I enjoy a very eclectic mix, but I particularly love painting to Beth Orton ( admittedly annoying during non painting times for some odd reason), all things Pat Metheny who I heard for the first time at age 16 and have religiously stalked and have been loyal too ever since, and a variety of old (Leo Sayer...laughing...I'm so much dating myself here as I bet most of my clients will say, "who is that??" ) and new stuff (Ray LaMontagne...so , so beautiful).
I don't need much in the way of inspiration. A little goes a long way with me. Sometimes it's something I've heard or seen. Sometimes it's my own abstract thought or concept, maybe a bit premature, so I jot it down for later use. I have handwritten notes and magazine and newspaper clippings all over the place, on bulletin boards, in files...I have drawers full of images that have caught my eye or triggered something in me. Artistic people tend to collect stuff that inspires them, resonates with them. Perhaps, for that 'just in case the inspiration dries up" moment, if God forbid it were to actually ever come.
When planets align and all these elements come together, that in itself is inspiring. It's the rare moment, sacred and valuable. It shouldn't be rushed. It cannot be forced. When it just feels right, that's when I paint. And not a moment sooner.
It's almost 2 am...time to find my sleep.

In Shell's own words
My art studio is always filled with music, laughter, artistic inspiration and a revolving door of visiting guests… my always amusing and fabulous kids, Jordan and Lexi… my husband of 16 years and ‘treasure map X’, Jeff… my many unique and wonderful friends. I wear jeans everyday and often go barefoot. I love to answer the phones and talk to my clients. I always ask what design is their favorite…their choice tells me a lot about them. We become connected simply because my art, every stroke, contains so much of me.
Running my business, Shell Artistree, comes easy to me. A group of creative, smart funny and lovely women make up my team. We laugh an awful lot, but we also all work hard, creating and building this company, day by day, to fulfill my vision and dream. A little piece of each of us ends up in every product we offer to our clients.
I wouldn’t want it any other way.
